Hong Kong Island Day Trips
Compare Cheung Chau, Lamma Island, Peng Chau and Lantau by ferry access and trip pace, then plan around your group and activities.

Choose an island for your trip
This is a planning guide, not a claim of first-hand testing or a guarantee of travel times. The Hong Kong Tourism Board covers attractions across the outlying islands; use the latest Transport Department and operator notices for travel arrangements.
| Destination | May suit | Planning notes | Official guide |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cheung Chau | First-time visitors, harbour walks, market streets and local snacks | Start with activities near the ferry pier and add walking according to your group. Allow extra time on busy days. | HKTB Cheung Chau guide |
| Lamma Island | Walking, coastal views and food along the way | Choose Yung Shue Wan or Sok Kwu Wan as your start point, then confirm the ferry back from your planned endpoint. | Transport Department ferry details |
| Peng Chau | A slower pace, a short walk and village lanes | Check the ferry frequency and do not assume that connecting island services run at convenient times. | HKTB island guide |
| Lantau: Mui Wo / Tai O | Coastal scenery, countryside and a fishing village | Check ferry and connecting transport times before combining several locations in one day. | Transport Department ferry routes |
Plan your day in four steps
- Pick one main destination: for a first trip, focusing on one island can avoid rushing between ferries.
- Check transport: review the Transport Department route, operator, schedule and fare information, then check the operator's latest service notices.
- Adjust for your group: if travelling with older adults or children, check walking distance, slopes, rest points and toilets before choosing a route.
- Plan the return: allow time for queues and check the last ferry, weather, sea conditions and service notices.
Published routes and fares can change and may have effective dates. This guide avoids fixed fare and timetable figures; check the official information before departure.
Is Shek Kwu Chau a regular day-trip destination
We do not recommend treating Shek Kwu Chau as an ordinary public day-trip destination. The Transport Department's published list of franchised and licensed ferry services does not show a regular public route to the island. This does not establish that access is impossible in every circumstance, but it does not support planning a normal public-ferry visit. Do not travel there or land without explicit permission from the relevant manager.
The Environmental Protection Department describes a waste-management facility on an artificial island near Shek Kwu Chau. That project site is distinct from a public tourist pier or an open-access attraction. Keep the island and the nearby artificial island separate when checking information.
